Goal & Topics

While practitioners are trying to overcome the restrictions of workflow thinking, the research on the topic is somewhat lagging. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss theoretical and practical problems and solutions in the area of non-workflow based approaches to BPM in general, and ACM (as a leading movement) in particular. This workshop is aimed to promote new, non-traditional ways of modelling and controlling business processes, the ones that promote and facilitate collaboration and creativity in the frame of business processes.

We strongly encourage the submissions reporting a synergy of innovative research and best practices in the area of ACM and other non-workflow approaches to BPM, including state-oriented BPM, human-centric BPM, data-centric BPM, artifact-centric BPM, knowledge-driven BPM, etc. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

I. Non-workflow process management:

  1. Theoretical views on business processes not based on the workflow
  2. Non-workflow paradigms and process modeling methodologies
  3. Agile business process management
  4. Process management based on cooperation
  5. Non-prescriptive process specifications (e.g. constraint-based, declarative, etc.)
  6. Experimental works and case studies that employ non-workflow perspectives on business processes of any kind, e.g. systems perspective, including viable system model, and socio-technical perspective
  7. Teaching non-workflow approaches

II. Adaptive Case Management:

  1. Characteristics and application area for Adaptive Case Management (ACM)
  2. Comparative analysis of tools and applications that support ACM
  3. Process analysis in ACM
  4. Knowledge management for ACM
  5. ACM vs. BPM
  6. Empirical studies of Case Management Processes
  7. Level of automation achievable in ACM that does not convert ACM into workflow
  8. Process improvement for case and adaptive case management

III. Decision Modeling and Management in the frame of ACM and other non-workflow process management:

  1. Supporting decision-making for knowledge worker
  2. Decision modeling
  3. Decision making in ACM: cases, theories, best practices
  4. Extending process models with decision models
  5. DMN, Business Rules and other techniques in non-workflow and ACM
